What You Need Before Jump-Starting a Car

Jump starting a car can be a lifesaver when your battery dies unexpectedly. However, it’s important to do it safely to avoid damage to your vehicle or injury to yourself. Follow this step-by-step guide to jump start your car safely and get back on the road quickly.

What You’ll Need:

• Jumper cables
• Another vehicle with a fully charged battery
• Protective gloves and eyewear (optional but recommended)

Step 1: Prepare Both Vehicles

• Park the working vehicle close to the dead vehicle, but ensure they do not touch.
• Turn off both vehicles and remove the keys.
• Engage both parking brakes for safety.

Step 2: Locate the Batteries

• Open the hoods of both cars and locate their batteries.
• Identify the positive (+) and negative (–) terminals on each battery.
• Clean any corrosion from the terminals if necessary.

Step 3: Connect the Jumper Cables in the Correct Order

1. Red to Dead: Attach one red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
2. Red to Donor: Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.
3. Black to Donor: Attach one black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery.
4. Black to Ground: Attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s engine block or chassis, away from the battery and fuel system.

Note: Do NOT connect the negative clamp directly to the dead battery’s negative terminal to avoid sparks.

Step 4: Start the Working Vehicle

• Start the engine of the working car and let it run for a few minutes.
• This allows the dead battery to charge slightly.

Step 5: Start the Dead Vehicle

• Try starting the car with the dead battery.
• If it doesn’t start immediately, wait a few more minutes and try again.
• Do not crank the engine for more than 5-10 seconds at a time.

Step 6: Remove the Jumper Cables Carefully

• Remove the cables in the reverse order of connection:

1. Black clamp from the grounded metal surface on the dead car.
2. Black clamp from the negative terminal of the good battery.
3. Red clamp from the positive terminal of the good battery.
4. Red clamp from the positive terminal of the dead battery.

Step 7: Keep the Jump Started Car Running

• Keep the previously dead car running for at least 15-30 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.

• Always wear protective gloves and eyewear if possible.
• Avoid leaning directly over the batteries during the process.
• Never let the clamps touch each other while connected to a battery.
• If the battery is cracked, leaking, or visibly damaged, do NOT attempt to jump start it.
